I bought this for research purposes after reading Pocahontas: Her Life and Legend, which references this book. There are so many new things I've learned about her that I would not have learned from anywhere else. If you are a teacher and want to cover Pocahontas in your lectures, I would absolutely recommend this book.Some people may have a problem with how repetitious it is, but I felt that this was helpful in remembering details, events, and terminology. It's very easy reading that you could probably fly through in a few hours, but you will have a much better understanding of a very misunderstood and misrepresented woman in American History.

I almost gave this 4 stars because the writing style is a little difficult to read but decided that it is a story that is too important not to earn 5. This is the "other side" of the story of Pocahontas that everyone should be required to read. I believe there are always at least two sides to any story and this one should not be missed. I also think that this "version of the story" is both believable and very sad. Read it and weep... a look at our country and history thorough native American's eyes.

Overall, a pretty good book. The area Iâ€™m from is pretty saturated with native culture, and while I am white, one of my closest friends is native and sheâ€™s taken me to powwows. That initial exposure piqued my interest. I think learning from history and other cultures is important and as a white person its my job to educate prejudice white people that may not otherwise listen to a non white person. This book is informative, but, it repeats its self a bit. Iâ€™m unsure if thatâ€™s just how indigenous story telling is, or more of the authors style. This would be helpful for someone that is forgetful or doesnâ€™t have a ton of time to read so days go past between picking it up. The structure of the chapters is very nice as well! Forget everything you thought you knew about the story of Pocahontas, most of it is lies fabricated by the English to look good. I wish there was more detail though, this book is strictly the oral history in a written format. If youâ€™re someone unacquainted with Powhatan culture you may need to do some googling as you go. (Ex. Where did quiakros come from? Were they born into this role or elected? Why did the quiakros not use their power to override the decisions of the chief?) It was worth the read for sure, but left me wishing for some more details.

"The True Story of Pocahontas" provides its reader with the view of Pocahontas's native people about the life and the death of a well known Native American. I appreciated to read the story from a native perspective as it often helps to hear a story from different points of view. "The True Story of Pocahontas" is worth-while to read as it helps to remove some of the myth about a young life of a woman turn between two worlds.

Lin Custalow, was a chief and historian. It's a fascinating read by someone who knows the tribe's history.

I am a great grandson of Wahunseneca...My 2nd Cousin is the author of this book(Dr. Custalow) and I am so happy to finally able to refer my friends to a reliable, honest and unflinching true account of this long misunderstood and sad tale of Matoaka and the "Manifest Destiny" of the European settlers who arrived on our shores in 1607....and still, we welcome any and all who would be brothers and sisters of the Powhatan Nation. To my family of the Mattaponi, I say Noua ga ta. At this time of "Giving Thanks", I raise my eyes, my voice and my heart to Ahone and say Thank You for this most glorious experience. As listed in my title, I am a Virginia fourth-grade teacher, and my students are expected to study Virginia history. In 2008, the revised VA Standards of Learning (SOL) for Virginia Studies went into effect. These included requiring students to identify and locate the eight state-recognized tribes. This got me to thinking, "Was I teaching an accurate account of Jamestown? Or was I only passing on what the conquerors stated?" As an educator, I feel I am obligated to know the truth, and to present the truth to others. So when I discovered Dr. Linwood and Ms. Daniel's book, I was delighted at the chance to improve my own knowledge.The Mattaponi tribe calls this a part of their sacred oral tradition. As an amateur historical storyteller, I know how the epic tales were learned and passed on. A student worked with a master of the craft, meticulously memorizing not only the words, but the tone of a tale until it was learned perfectly. Therefore, I believe that this is a true telling of the events in Jamestown. After all, knowing what we know of European settlers, is it so hard to believe that they would resort to violence and trickery to accomplish their means?The book was well-organized and logical in its arguments. I enjoyed the chronology, the end notes with references, the rich bibliography, and the index to increase my understanding of the events. I was so impressed by the number of source documents that I am interested in perusing several of the books listed in the bibliography, to continue my research.This is an important book, but it will not be an easy one to take. It will require an open mind, and a willingness to unlearn many of the misconceptions taught in popular culture and "history" books. Thank you, Dr. Linwood and Ms. Daniel for enlightening me. I hope to take the lessons I have learned and apply them in my classroom.

There are some real discrepancies between this story, based on hundreds of years of indigenous oral history, carefully learned generation to generation, and the whitewashed (pun intended) American legend we have all heard many times. The best one can hope for is that the truth lies somewhere in between both traditions. This book will ring true to those who have studied the history of trade and bad deals made with the First People.
